The Nigeria Police Force has suspended the enforcement of the tinted glass permit policy nationwide, following a court order restraining the move. The policy, which was set to take effect on January 2, 2026, requires motorists to obtain annual permits for tinted glasses through a digital portal.
A Delta State High Court in Orerokpe issued the restraining order on December 17, 2025, in response to a suit filed by Kunle Edun SAN and others, challenging the policy’s legality. The police had announced the resumption of enforcement on December 15, 2025, citing public safety and internal security concerns.
The court order restrains the police from implementing, enforcing, or taking any further steps to enforce the tinted glass permit policy pending the hearing and determination of the substantive suit. The police have entered appearance in the matter, raised preliminary objections, and formally applied for the vacation of the interim order.
The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) had previously condemned the policy, arguing it’s unconstitutional and enables police harassment and extortion. The police maintain the policy is necessary for security reasons, but will comply with the court order.
The case has been adjourned to January 20, 2026, for further proceedings. The police assure the public that they will communicate further developments and issue clear guidance as appropriate following the court’s determination of the matter.
The suspension of enforcement is a temporary reprieve for motorists, pending the court’s final decision on the policy’s legality.
