Pope Leo XIV has urged that the welfare of Venezuelans be prioritized following the US operation that led to the capture of President Nicolas Maduro. In his Angelus prayer, the Pope emphasized that the well-being of the Venezuelan people should take precedence over all other considerations, leading to an end to violence and a path towards justice and peace .
The Pope’s comments come a day after US special forces captured Maduro in Caracas, with President Donald Trump declaring that the US would “run” Venezuela and tap its oil reserves. Pope Leo XIV stressed the importance of guaranteeing Venezuela’s sovereignty, respecting human and civil rights, and working together to build a peaceful future, especially for the poorest who are suffering due to the economic situation.
This is not the first time Pope Leo XIV has spoken out on the situation in Venezuela. He has previously expressed concern about the country’s economic struggles and urged dialogue between the US and Venezuela to resolve tensions.
