Two more lawmakers from Rivers State have withdrawn their support for the impeachment move against Governor Siminalayi Fubara, bringing the total number of withdrawals to four. Hon. Barile Nwakoh, representing Khana Constituency I, and Hon. Emilia Amadi of Obio/Akpor Constituency II, announced their decision, citing appeals from elders and leaders within and outside the state.
The lawmakers had initially signed a notice of impeachment against Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, alleging gross misconduct. However, they now urge their colleagues to seek a political solution rather than pursuing removal from office. This development follows similar withdrawals by Hon. Sylvanus Nwankwo, Minority Leader of the Assembly, and Hon. Peter Abbey of Degema Constituency.
The Rivers State House of Assembly is expected to reconvene on January 15, 2026, to deliberate on the impeachment proceedings. However, with growing calls for dialogue, it’s unclear if the process will proceed .
The Pan Niger Delta Elders Forum (PANDEF) has constituted a seven-man reconciliation committee to mediate the crisis. The committee, chaired by former Attorney-General of the Federation, Chief Kanu Agabi, aims to achieve a peaceful resolution.
Former Governor Peter Odili has reaffirmed support for Fubara, stating that the political crisis in the state is evolving, and more lawmakers may withdraw from the impeachment plot. The situation remains tense, with stakeholders urging restraint and dialogue.
The impeachment move is the latest development in the ongoing feud between Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, now Minister of the Federal Capital Territory. The outcome of this situation is uncertain, and it may have significant implications for the state’s politics.
