Atiku Abubakar, former Vice President and 2023 PDP presidential candidate, has stated that his son Abba’s defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC) is a personal choice and doesn’t reflect his own political stance. Abba, also known as Abubakar Atiku Abubakar, joined the APC and pledged support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027 .
Atiku emphasized that in a democracy, individuals have the right to make choices based on personal conscience and political beliefs without coercion. He stated, “As a democrat, I do not coerce my own children in matters of conscience, and I certainly will not coerce Nigerians.
Abba’s defection was announced at the National Assembly, where he was received by Senator Barau Jibrin and other APC leaders. He cited the outstanding leadership style of Senator Barau and his belief in President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda as reasons for joining the APC .
Atiku used the opportunity to criticize the APC-led government, describing its governance as poor and responsible for severe economic and social hardships. He reiterated his commitment to working with like-minded patriots to restore good governance and offer Nigerians a credible alternative.
Abba has directed all coordinators and members of his political structure, formerly known as the Haske Atiku Organisation, to join the APC and support President Tinubu’s re-election bid. The organisation has been renamed the Haske Bola Tinubu Organisation .
Atiku’s reaction to his son’s defection has sparked speculation about its implications for his political future, particularly given his recent decision to join the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 elections .
