Imam Abdullahi Abubakar, the revered Muslim cleric from Plateau State, Nigeria, has passed away at the age of 90. He gained international recognition for sheltering over 300 Christians in his mosque and home during a violent attack in June 2018 .
The attack, which occurred in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area, left dozens dead, but Imam Abubakar’s courageous actions saved countless lives. He refused to hand over the Christians to the attackers, even when threatened, saying his religion teaches him to protect lives regardless of faith.
Imam Abubakar’s selfless bravery earned him widespread recognition, including the 2019 International Religious Freedom Award from the United States government. He was also honored with the national title of Member of the Order of the Niger by the Nigerian government.
Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State described Imam Abubakar as a symbol of peace, unity, and selfless leadership. His legacy will continue to inspire interfaith harmony and compassion in Nigeria .
The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and other prominent Nigerians have paid tributes to Imam Abubakar, praising his extraordinary commitment to protecting human life. His actions demonstrate that faith can unite people across religious divides.
Imam Abubakar’s passing is a significant loss, but his legacy will live on, reminding Nigerians of the power of compassion, love, and unity.
