Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke is demanding the release of ₦130 billion in local government funds allegedly withheld by the Federal Government. Adeleke claims the funds are rightfully owed to the state and are crucial for governance and development.
The dispute centers on the legitimacy of the local government chairpersons elected in February 2025, with the Federal Government questioning the process. Adeleke’s administration argues the elections were lawful and the funds should be released.
The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has backed Adeleke, stating there’s no legal basis for withholding the funds and urging President Bola Tinubu to release them. The NBA emphasizes the funds belong to the local governments and should be used for the benefit of the people.
The Federal Government, however, argues Osun State is being deceitful and wants the Supreme Court to dismiss the state’s suit. The government claims the local government chairpersons’ terms have expired, and new elections are needed.
Adeleke’s administration counters that the Federal Government is interfering in state matters and undermining democracy. The governor has appealed to the Federal Government to release the funds, citing pressing needs in education, healthcare, and infrastructure.
The case highlights the ongoing tensions between state and federal governments in Nigeria over resource allocation and governance.
