The Federal Government of Nigeria is set to arraign suspects involved in the June 2025 killings in Yelwata, Benue State, on Monday, February 2, 2026. The Office of the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice confirmed that the suspects will be brought before Trial Justice Joyce Abdulmalik of the Federal High Court in Abuja. This move is seen as a strong signal to those responsible for the violence, and the government has assured that justice will be served.
The Yelwata massacre occurred in June 2025, resulting in over 100 deaths and thousands displaced. The attack was linked to armed herdsmen who targeted homes, a market, and a Catholic mission. President Bola Tinubu has condemned the killings and ordered relevant agencies to apprehend the perpetrators.
The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, revealed that 53 suspects have been arrested in connection with the attacks in Benue and Plateau states. Specifically, 26 suspects were arrested for the Yelwata attack, 22 for a Plateau incident, and 5 for another attack in Makurdi .
The arraignment is a culmination of thorough investigations carried out by government agencies. The Federal Government has emphasized its commitment to protecting lives and property, as enshrined in the Constitution.
The suspects face various charges, including terrorism, murder, and unlawful possession of firearms. Some have already pleaded guilty to certain charges, while others have denied the allegations.
The Department of State Services (DSS) has also arraigned nine individuals identified as prime suspects in connection with the killings. These suspects are facing charges ranging from murder to unlawful possession of firearms.
The Benue State Government has been working towards restoring peace and stability in the region. Governor Hyacinth Alia has appealed to the Federal Government to establish a Special Intervention Fund for communities affected by the attacks.
