The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has clarified reports of US troops deployment to Nigeria, stating that the country’s security partnership with the US focuses on capacity building, professional military education, intelligence sharing, logistics support, and strategic dialogue aimed at addressing shared security concerns, including terrorism and transnational threats. The DHQ emphasized that all engagements are conducted with full respect for Nigeria’s sovereignty and existing bilateral frameworks.
According to Major General Samaila Uba, Director of Defence Information, the cooperation between Nigeria and the US is rooted in mutual respect and aims to strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture without compromising national independence. The DHQ reassured citizens that Nigeria’s defence partnerships are transparent, policy-driven, and aligned with constitutional provisions.
The US Africa Command (AFRICOM) had earlier announced the deployment of a small team of American military personnel to Nigeria, citing increased collaboration between the two nations to combat jihadist violence. The deployment follows a meeting between US General Dagvin Anderson and Nigerian President Bola Tinubu in Rome last year.
The Nigerian government has maintained that the partnership with the US is governed by Nigeria’s laws and strategic interests, designed solely to enhance operational effectiveness in fighting terrorism and insurgency. Defence Minister Christopher Musa clarified that the deployed personnel are not combat forces but a small advisory team providing intelligence support and training.
The US troops are reportedly focused on providing specialised intelligence assistance to support counter-terrorism efforts, particularly in areas affected by banditry and violent extremism. The move comes amid escalating violence against Christians in Nigeria, which President Donald Trump has described as an “existential threat.
However, the Nigerian government has rejected claims of systematic persecution of Christians, maintaining that insecurity affects citizens of all faiths. Experts say the country’s security crises result in the death of both Christians and Muslims, often without distinction.
The DHQ has emphasized that Nigeria’s sovereignty remains intact, and the Armed Forces of Nigeria remain fully committed to safeguarding the nation’s territorial integrity while working with credible partners to strengthen national security.
