Arsenal is flying high after a 3-0 win over Sunderland, with Viktor Gyokeres scoring a crucial double to extend their lead to nine points at the top of the Premier League table. Gyokeres came off the bench to score two goals, taking his season tally to 13 goals and extending his streak to six goals in eight games.
The Swede’s impressive performance has been praised by Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, who highlighted his resilience and ability to improve. Arteta said, “He doesn’t seem too affected by the real highs or the lows and that’s what we need – stability. He’s very demanding of himself. He’s constantly trying to improve.
Arsenal dominated the first half but had to wait until the 42nd minute to get ahead when Martin Zubimendi’s sweetly-struck low drive crept inside the post. Gyokeres sealed the win with his two goals, one in the 66th minute and another in stoppage time .
This win puts Arsenal in a strong position to claim their first Premier League title since 2004. They have 56 points from 25 games, with Manchester City, who face Liverpool away on Sunday, on 47 points from 24 games.
Gyokeres’ impact extends beyond his goalscoring prowess. His relentless movement and pressing have added a new dimension to Arsenal’s attack, making them a formidable force. He ranks fifth for runs in behind the opposition backline and fourth for runs to make himself available for a cross while the ball is in a wide area.
The Swedish striker’s ability to hold up play and attract defenders has created space for Arsenal’s creative players like Bukayo Saka and Martin Ødegaard. His presence has been invaluable, especially with Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz spending time injured.
