Nigerian music icon 2Baba has shared his perspective on the ongoing conversation about who currently sits at the top of the Afrobeats scene, naming Burna Boy as the leading force. He made the comment during a recent episode of Mic on Podcast hosted by Seun Okinbaloye, where he was asked to choose one artist among the industry’s widely recognised “big three” — Wizkid, Burna Boy and Davido.
Speaking candidly, 2Baba, born Innocent Idibia, noted that while he enjoys music from all three artistes, his assessment is based on the present state of the global music landscape. “I have favourite songs from each of them, but I think Burna is on top of the game right now,” he said.
He further clarified that his opinion was not influenced by assumptions about commercial earnings or personal achievements. “I don’t know their bank accounts or have details about their individual successes,” he explained. “But from my understanding of the music world and common sense, Burna is currently on top — not just in Nigeria or Africa, but globally.”
Burna Boy, whose full name is Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu, has continued to strengthen his reputation as a global Afrobeats ambassador. The Grammy Award winner in 2021 recently wrapped up his No Sign of Weakness tour, which recorded multiple sold-out shows across North America, further underscoring his international appeal.
Wizkid, born Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun, has also maintained a strong global presence. His album Morayo emerged as the most streamed album on Nigerian Apple Music in 2025, and he recently released a collaborative EP with Asake.
Davido, whose real name is David Adedeji Adeleke, remains one of the most influential figures in Nigerian music, renowned for his high-energy performances and consistent chart-topping releases. He also recently headlined the just-concluded AFCON tournament.
2Baba was careful to stress that his remarks were not intended to diminish the talents of Wizkid or Davido. “Everyone has their own style,” he said. “This is simply my view from a broader, general perspective.”
