President Bola Tinubu is set to embark on a historic two-day state visit to the United Kingdom from March 18 to 19, 2026, marking the first such visit by a Nigerian leader in 37 years. This milestone visit follows an official invitation from King Charles III, who will host Tinubu and his wife, First Lady Oluremi Tinubu, at Windsor Castle .
The state visit is a significant diplomatic milestone, aimed at strengthening Nigeria-UK relations. According to the UK Mission in Nigeria, the visit provides an opportunity to further strengthen the enduring partnership between the two nations.
Tinubu and King Charles have met on several occasions since assuming office in May 2023. Their interactions have focused on deepening bilateral relations, particularly in areas such as climate cooperation, economic partnership, and global policy coordination.
The last Nigerian leader to undertake a state visit to the UK was former military president Ibrahim Babangida in 1989, highlighting the significance of Tinubu’s upcoming diplomatic engagement.
State visits are considered a vital instrument of soft-power diplomacy, combining royal ceremony with high-level political engagement to strengthen bilateral relations with strategic partners. The visit is expected to deepen cooperation between Nigeria and the UK across key sectors, including trade, climate action, and strategic global engagement.
King Charles has longstanding ties with Nigeria, having visited the country four times as Prince of Wales. He has expressed fondness for Nigerian Pidgin English and Afrobeats music, adding a personal touch to the diplomatic relations.
The agenda for the March visit has not been disclosed, but state visits typically include carriage processions and a state banquet, and usually coincide with visiting leaders having political meetings.
