The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has informed the National Assembly that it needs N873.78 billion to conduct the 2027 elections. INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, presented the budget proposal to the Senate Committee on Finance and the House of Representatives Committee on Appropriations.
According to Yakubu, the proposed budget is based on several assumptions, including the conduct of presidential, national assembly, governorship, and state assembly elections. He highlighted the challenges faced by INEC in previous elections, citing inadequate funding as a major concern.
The INEC chairman warned that funding gaps may affect preparations for the 2027 elections, including voter registration, procurement of election materials, and training of staff. He emphasized the need for timely release of funds to ensure the commission meets its objectives.
The National Assembly is considering INEC’s budget proposal, with some lawmakers expressing concerns about the huge financial requirements. Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Finance, acknowledged the importance of adequate funding for the elections.
INEC has begun preparations for the 2027 elections, including updating the voters’ register and procuring election materials. The commission is also planning to introduce new voting technologies to enhance the credibility and transparency of the electoral process.
The 2027 elections are crucial, with several key positions up for grabs, including the presidency and governorships. INEC’s ability to conduct free, fair, and credible elections depends on its funding and logistical preparedness.
Yakubu assured the National Assembly that INEC is committed to conducting peaceful and credible elections, despite the funding challenges. He urged lawmakers to ensure that the commission receives adequate funding to meet its objectives.
