President Bola Tinubu has described General Murtala Mohammed’s legacy as a lasting moral compass for Nigeria and Africa, 50 years after his assassination. Mohammed, Nigeria’s fourth Head of State, served for just 201 days but left an indelible mark on the country’s history. His courage, discipline, and vision continue to inspire Africans, with his famous “Africa has come of age” speech remaining a defining moment in Nigeria’s foreign policy.
Tinubu praised Mohammed’s commitment to accountable governance, conflict resolution, poverty reduction, and economic transformation. The late leader’s efforts to sanitize the public service, restructure the Armed Forces, and pursue policies aimed at restoring discipline and accountability in government were also highlighted .
Mohammed’s foreign policy stance was assertive and principled, earning Nigeria a respected voice in international relations. He championed liberation struggles in Southern Africa, particularly in Angola, Mozambique, and South Africa, and opposed apartheid.
The creation of seven new states, expanding Nigeria’s federation from 12 to 19, was another significant achievement during Mohammed’s tenure. He also conceptualized the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, and initiated a transition programme to civil rule.
Mohammed’s assassination on February 13, 1976, was a national shock, with widespread protests and tributes pouring in. His legacy continues to shape Nigeria’s governance and national geography.
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo noted that Mohammed’s enduring legacy includes grooming a successor, which many leaders fail to do. Mohammed’s mentorship influenced Obasanjo to sustain the legacy of transferring power to a presidential democracy.
The Murtala Mohammed Foundation, in collaboration with the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs, organized a conference to commemorate Mohammed’s 50th anniversary. Speakers praised his Pan-Africanist ideologies and selfless service.
Mohammed’s ideals of discipline, patriotism, and purposeful leadership remain a benchmark for Nigerian leaders. His legacy serves as a reminder of the importance of good governance, accountability, and national unity.
