Peter Obi has officially declared his intention to run for president in 2027 under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) party. He made this announcement at the OBIDIENT Conference in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, emphasizing his commitment to transparency and fair elections. Obi stressed that Nigeria must get it right in 2027, with election results transmitted online in real-time.
According to Obi, his administration would prioritize education and healthcare if elected, citing examples of countries that achieved greatness through intentional investment in these sectors. He also vowed to tackle corruption, stating it could be reduced by 60% if leaders and their families abstain from it.
Obi’s decision to join the ADC stems from concerns that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) wouldn’t recognize Labour Party leadership with him as a member. He assured supporters he’ll contest the election, even if held in “their bedroom”, and transmit results if authorities refuse .
The former Anambra State Governor highlighted his clean track record, citing his tenure as governor where he avoided personal enrichment. He approved over 100 Certificates of Occupancy on government land, with none going to his family.
Obi criticized the current administration’s economic policies, noting Nigeria’s rising debt profile with repayment obligations stretching to 2045-2050. He urged Nigerians to unite and rescue the country from poor governance.
Dr. Tanko Yunusa, Coordinator of the OBIDIENT Movement, called for nationwide support and mobilization for Obi’s campaign. Dr. Ben Smith, Akwa Ibom State Coordinator, stressed unity among members to avoid internal divisions.
