The UK is introducing electronic visas (eVisas) for Nigerian travellers from February 25, 2026, as part of its transition to a fully digital border system. This means Nigerians applying for UK Visit visas will receive a digital record of their immigration status instead of a physical sticker in their passport.
The application process remains the same, requiring online submission, biometric information at a Visa Application Centre, and meeting eligibility criteria. The only difference is how the visa is issued: instead of a physical sticker, applicants will receive a secure digital record of their immigration status.
British Deputy High Commissioner in Abuja, Gill OBE, welcomed the transition, stating, “We are committed to making it easier for Nigerians to travel to the UK. This move to digital visas will streamline a key part of the visa process, making it more secure whilst reducing dependence on paper documents.
The eVisa offers several benefits, including faster passport return, easier management of immigration status online, and enhanced security since digital visas can’t be lost, stolen, or tampered with. Existing visa holders don’t need to take action, as their physical visas remain valid until expiration or replacement .
Nigerians will need to create a free UKVI account to access their eVisa, which will be available online through the UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) portal. This digital format allows travellers to manage their immigration status anytime, from any location .
The UK government emphasizes that the core requirements for visa applications remain unchanged. Applicants must still apply online, visit a Visa Application Centre for biometrics, and satisfy all eligibility rules.
The switch to eVisas is part of the UK’s broader effort to modernize its immigration system. The digital visa system is expected to deliver multiple benefits, including improved security and easier management of immigration status.
According to the UK government, the transition promises real perks for Nigerians, including quicker passport returns after processing and anytime-anywhere online management of immigration status.
