Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). He announced this in a statewide broadcast on Friday, stating that his cabinet and PDP members in the state have joined him in this move.
Fintiri’s decision is reportedly driven by the need to fast-track development and act in the best interest of Adamawa State’s people. He emphasized that this move is not motivated by personal ambition but rather the long-term stability, development, and prosperity of the state.
The governor’s defection follows recent resignations from the PDP by 15 Adamawa State Assembly members, including Speaker Bathiya Wesley, citing the “lingering crisis” in the party. This move potentially hands the APC control of 30 states across Nigeria.
Fintiri has pledged to back President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, aiming to deliver transformative change across social welfare, infrastructure, housing, and inclusive economic development. He urged supporters to register with the APC and prepare for a secure future under the new alignment.
The defection leaves the PDP with only three remaining governors: Bala Mohammed (Bauchi), Seyi Makinde (Oyo), and Dauda Lawal (Zamfara). This development significantly boosts the APC’s dominance in Nigeria’s political landscape.
In his broadcast, Fintiri emphasized that the decision was made after extensive consultations with various stakeholders in the state. He described the move as strategic, allowing Adamawa to leverage the APC’s national presence for development.
The APC now controls 30 out of Nigeria’s 36 states, solidifying its position as the ruling party. This shift underscores the APC’s aggressive strategy to absorb opposition governors.
