The Olu of Warri, His Majesty Ogiame Atuwatse III, has conferred the prestigious traditional title of Utukpa-Oritse (meaning “The Light of God”) on Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu. This honor was bestowed during her one-day homecoming visit to Warri in Delta State, celebrating her maternal Itsekiri roots.
The ceremony was a grand affair, attended by prominent traditional rulers, including the Ooni of Ife, His Imperial Majesty Oba Enitan Adeyeye Ogunwusi, and Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori. The event highlighted the deep cultural heritage of the Itsekiri people and underscored the significance of the First Lady’s heritage ties to the kingdom.
The Utukpa-Oritse title is a revered honor symbolizing heritage, service, and royal recognition. It’s also known as Ugbọnẹ́, reflecting the kingdom’s recognition of Senator Tinubu’s contributions to women’s empowerment and social welfare.
The Olu of Warri described Remi Tinubu as a source of immense pride for the Itsekiri nation, recognizing her profound contributions and leadership impact on Nigeria as a whole. He praised her public service record and the dignity with which she represents Nigeria both at home and abroad.
The First Lady, in her remarks, emphasized the importance of national unity and social cohesion, urging Nigerians to embrace unity irrespective of ethnic, religious, or political differences. She also donated ₦50 million to support 1,000 women petty traders in the kingdom through her Renewed Hope Initiative.
This honor is not new for Remi Tinubu, who has received several traditional titles and national honors, including being named Yeye Asiwaju Gbogbo Ile Oodua by the Ooni of Ife, Sarauniyar Yaki (Warrior, and Ugosimba 1 of Enugu.
Governor Sheriff Oborevwori praised Remi Tinubu as a compassionate and consistent leader, highlighting her influence beyond Nigeria’s borders. He noted that her visit marked a historic homecoming, celebrating her Itsekiri maternal heritage.
The ceremony drew a cross-section of Nigeria’s political and traditional leadership, underlining its national importance. The investiture was more than a formal decoration – it was a homecoming, reconnecting Remi Tinubu to her ancestral roots.
