The US has announced the destruction of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard force headquarters, but it comes with a heavy price – three US service members were killed in action, and five are seriously wounded. The operation, dubbed “Operation Epic Fury,” was a joint effort with Israel, aiming to topple Iran’s government. US President Donald Trump claims the war will last about four weeks, and Iran’s leaders “want to talk.
The Pentagon reported that the three US service members were killed and five others seriously wounded during the operation. Several others sustained minor shrapnel injuries and concussions. The US Central Command (CENTCOM) stated that “major combat operations continue, and our response effort is ongoing.
Iran has retaliated with missile and drone attacks on US and Israeli targets, including a strike on the central Israeli city of Beit Shemesh, killing at least nine people. The conflict has spread to several countries, with explosions reported in Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, Oman, and Israel.
The international community is on high alert, with the UAE withdrawing its ambassador from Iran and closing its embassy. The US has urged citizens in the Gulf region to shelter in place.
US President Donald Trump has vowed to avenge the US combat deaths, stating that “America will avenge their deaths and deliver the most punishing blow to the terrorists who have waged war against, basically, civilisation”. He also warned that the Iranian regime seeks to kill and that “the lives of courageous American heroes may be lost, and we may have casualties.
The conflict began with a bombing that killed Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and other top officials. Iran has retaliated with missile and drone attacks on countries across the Middle East. Israel described Khamenei’s death as a “first step”, and military spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Nadav Shoshani boasted that the joint operation “eliminated 40 senior commanders, including Khamenei, in one minute.
Iran’s government has announced a 40-day mourning period and appointed an interim leadership council to lead the country while a permanent successor is found for Khamenei. The situation remains fluid, with both sides exchanging blows.
