Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has appealed to the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) to expose criminals among their ranks who are fuelling insecurity in the state. Aiyedatiwa made this call during a meeting with MACBAN leaders, citing recent kidnappings and killings in Ilu-Abo and Uso communities as a major concern.
The governor emphasized that the state government is determined to tackle insecurity, and anyone found sponsoring or involved in criminal activities will face the full weight of the law, regardless of their legitimate business interests. He noted that some individuals are using cattle rearing as a cover-up for their nefarious activities .
Aiyedatiwa disclosed that security agencies have arrested 99 suspects in connection with the crimes, and some are already making confessional statements. He warned that the government will not tolerate any form of criminality and urged MACBAN to cooperate with authorities to identify and eliminate criminal elements .
The governor also suggested the establishment of Fulani vigilante groups to support security efforts, emphasizing the need for community-driven initiatives to address insecurity. He assured that the government is committed to protecting the rights of herders and ensuring they can pursue their legitimate activities without fear or intimidation.
MACBAN leaders have pledged to work with the government to expose and eliminate criminals, stressing that not all Fulani people are involved in these activities. The association’s chairman, Ali Abubakar Maunde, noted that insecurity is a concern for all stakeholders and assured the government of their commitment to promoting peace and security in the state.
Maunde also called on the government to provide support for herders, including access to grazing lands and veterinary services, to help them pursue their livelihoods sustainably. He emphasized the importance of distinguishing between genuine herders and criminals, urging the government to take a nuanced approach to addressing insecurity.
