FIFA has imposed fines on Nigeria and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) for fans’ misconduct during their 2026 World Cup playoff match. Nigeria’s football federation was fined 1,000 Swiss francs (approximately ₦1.7 million) for spectators throwing objects onto the pitch, violating Article 17.2.b of FIFA’s Disciplinary Code.
The DRC football association received a heavier fine of 5,000 Swiss francs for supporters using laser pointers, contravening Article 17.2.d. These incidents occurred during the intense playoff match, which ended in a 1-1 draw, with DRC winning 4-3 on penalties.
The match was played on November 16, 2025, at the Stade des Martyrs in Kinshasa, DRC. Nigeria had traveled to Kinshasa for the playoff, hoping to secure a spot in the 2026 World Cup.
Nigeria had filed a protest with FIFA, alleging that DRC fielded ineligible players, specifically mentioning Chancel Mbemba and Edo Kayembe. However, the disciplinary summary made no reference to this issue, and FIFA is yet to rule on the protest.
FIFA’s disciplinary actions highlight the organization’s commitment to maintaining order and safety during matches. The fines serve as a reminder to fans and football associations about the importance of adhering to FIFA’s rules and regulations.
The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) and the DRC football association have been notified of the fines and must settle them within the stipulated timeframe. Failure to pay could lead to further sanctions, including potential points deductions in future competitions.
