President Bola Tinubu has vowed to intensify efforts against insecurity in Nigeria, hosting Vice President Kashim Shettima and 23 governors at his Lagos residence. This comes after a recent phone call with French President Emmanuel Macron, where France agreed to provide military equipment and training to support Nigeria’s fight against terrorism.
The meeting highlights the gravity of the security situation in Nigeria, with Tinubu emphasizing that insecurity is the next major challenge for his administration, threatening development and economic progress. He directed security chiefs to relocate to Maiduguri to manage the situation and approved additional equipment and operational support for counter-terrorism efforts.
The President’s discussions with international partners, including the UK and France, have focused on securing equipment and operational support for Nigeria’s security agencies. He assured Nigerians that the Federal Government is investing in technology, logistics, and international collaboration to combat terrorism.
The insecurity challenge in Nigeria includes Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province insurgencies, banditry, and kidnapping. Tinubu warned that the Middle East crisis could impact inflation, transportation, and food prices, urging governors to prioritize vulnerable citizens’ needs.
France has historically maintained military cooperation with West African countries, particularly in the Sahel region. The collaboration with Nigeria aims to strengthen security forces and combat terrorism.
Tinubu extended condolences to Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum over the recent bombings, urging him to return and give a message of sympathy to the people. The President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to investing in technology and equipment to defeat terrorism.
The meeting with governors followed the Maiduguri bomb blasts that killed 23 people and injured 108. Tinubu emphasized collective action to overcome insecurity, describing it as an enemy of development, progress, and prosperity.
Nigeria’s collaboration with France and the UK aims to enhance security and stability. The government is exploring multiple international partnerships to strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture.
