The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, has criticized former Vice President Atiku Abubakar over the resolution of disputes linked to OPL 245, describing criticisms from Atiku’s camp as “misrepresentations” of a “landmark achievement” of the current administration. Fagbemi stated that OPL 245, located about 150 kilometers offshore, is projected to contribute 150,000 barrels per day to Nigeria’s oil production.
Fagbemi accused Atiku and others of advancing “self-serving interests” under the guise of patriotism, urging Nigerians to reject attempts to frustrate the resolution. He cited a 2025 Court of Appeal ruling that dismissed Malabu Oil & Gas Ltd’s challenge to the allocation of the oil block as statute-barred.
The OPL 245 dispute dates back to 1998 when it was awarded to Malabu Oil & Gas Ltd, revoked in 2001, and later allocated to Shell Nigeria Ultra-Deep Limited in 2002. The current administration’s resolution of the dispute is expected to unlock significant economic benefits, including increased government revenue and improved energy security.
Atiku had argued that the dispute remains active, citing fresh legal action initiated by Malabu Oil and Gas Limited. However, Fagbemi maintained that the matter has been conclusively settled, highlighting the Federal Government’s agreement with Eni and Nigerian Agip Exploration Limited.
The resolution of the OPL 245 dispute is seen as a significant milestone for Nigeria’s oil and gas sector, with potential to boost production and restore investor confidence. Fagbemi emphasized that the agreement has undergone rigorous judicial scrutiny in multiple jurisdictions without establishing wrongdoing against the companies involved .
Fagbemi also noted that Nigeria faced potential liabilities exceeding $2 billion in damages and associated costs due to delays in converting the oil block into an Oil Mining Lease. The current administration’s intervention has created a pathway for the asset’s full development.
The Federal Government has described those opposed to the resolution as doing so for selfish reasons rather than patriotism. Fagbemi urged Nigerians to view criticisms with caution and reject efforts aimed at derailing progress.
