The Ministerial-Designate for Power, Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe, has pledged to reposition Nigeria’s power sector through transparent and accountable reforms aimed at addressing persistent grid collapses and widespread electricity challenges.
Speaking during his Senate screening on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, Tegbe acknowledged the longstanding difficulties across the electricity value chain, stressing that although there is no “quick fix,” there is a clear and disciplined pathway to sustainable improvement anchored on effective execution and measurable results.
“We will not continue with business as usual. I will not make promises I cannot fulfill. We must close the metering gap and ensure Nigerians can monitor sector performance through a transparent public dashboard,” he stated.
According to him, the sector requires proper structuring and consistent implementation to deliver meaningful progress. “We will establish clear milestones and timelines,” he said, adding that honest engagement and decisive action are critical to restoring public confidence.
“We understand the challenges. What is required now is transparency, firm execution, and sincerity with Nigerians. We must reduce system disturbances, strengthen transmission infrastructure, ensure tariffs align with service delivery, and rebuild trust between operators and citizens,” Tegbe added.
He further noted that key reforms — including restoring sector credibility, improving gas supply, and accelerating nationwide metering — are expected to gain significant traction within the first year of implementation.
Tegbe also clarified reports circulating in some national publications suggesting he promised to fix the power sector within 100 days, noting that his position was centred on implementing reforms guided by the Renewed Hope agenda, transparency, and measurable progress.
Widely recognised for his track record in public sector leadership, Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe previously served as Director-General of the Nigeria-China Strategic Partnership (NCSP) and Chairman of the National Tax Policy Implementation Committee (NTPIC).
With more than three decades of professional experience at KPMG, Tegbe began his career as a civil engineer and has attended executive programmes at Lagos Business School, INSEAD, Harvard Kennedy School, and Harvard Business School.
He is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria and the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria, as well as a Certified in Governance of Enterprise IT (CGEIT) professional.
His experience also includes extensive engagements within the power sector, particularly in regulatory and institutional reforms involving agencies such as the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission and the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading Company.
