United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc has announced the retirement of its Group Chairman, Tony O. Elumelu, from the Board of Directors after completing the maximum 12-year tenure permitted for non-executive directors under applicable corporate governance regulations.
The bank also announced the appointment of Emmanuel N. Nnorom, a serving Non-Executive Director of UBA, as the new Group Chairman. His appointment is expected to take effect following the conclusion of Elumelu’s tenure, marking a new chapter in the leadership journey of one of Africa’s leading financial institutions.
The leadership transition was approved by the UBA Board of Directors and reflects the bank’s commitment to strong corporate governance, regulatory compliance and a seamless succession process designed to sustain its long-term growth strategy.
Elumelu’s retirement brings to an end a remarkable 12-year tenure during which he provided strategic leadership and contributed significantly to the transformation and expansion of the UBA Group.
Under his leadership, UBA strengthened its position as a major financial institution in Africa, expanding its operations across multiple African countries while maintaining a presence in key international financial markets. The bank also recorded significant growth in customer reach, digital banking innovation and financial inclusion initiatives.
The Board of Directors commended Elumelu for his visionary leadership, strategic direction and dedication to the growth of the institution, noting that his tenure was characterised by business expansion, improved operational efficiency, enhanced customer experience and increased shareholder value.
During his time as Chairman, Elumelu also championed initiatives that extended beyond traditional banking, promoting entrepreneurship, youth empowerment and economic development through various platforms aimed at supporting sustainable growth across Africa.
His leadership philosophy placed emphasis on responsible business practices, innovation and the belief that financial institutions have a major role to play in driving economic transformation and improving livelihoods.
Commenting on his retirement, Elumelu expressed appreciation for the opportunity to serve as Chairman of UBA and thanked the bank’s shareholders, customers, employees and stakeholders for their support throughout his tenure.
He expressed confidence in the future of the institution, noting that UBA has built a strong foundation capable of supporting continued growth and delivering greater value to its stakeholders under the incoming leadership.
The incoming Chairman, Emmanuel N. Nnorom, brings extensive experience in banking, finance, corporate governance and strategic management. His wealth of professional knowledge is expected to support UBA’s continued expansion and strengthen its position within Africa’s competitive financial services landscape.
Nnorom’s appointment comes at a time when the banking sector is undergoing significant transformation driven by technology, evolving customer expectations and increased demand for accessible financial services. His leadership will be expected to guide the bank through emerging opportunities while maintaining operational excellence and sustainable growth.
Industry observers noted that UBA’s next phase will require continued investment in digital innovation, financial inclusion and customer-focused solutions as the institution seeks to deepen its impact across Africa and global markets.
The leadership transition also reflects UBA’s commitment to maintaining institutional stability while embracing new perspectives that will support its future ambitions.
As Emmanuel Nnorom assumes the responsibility of leading the Board, stakeholders are optimistic that his extensive experience in finance and governance will help consolidate the achievements recorded under Elumelu’s leadership and position the bank for further success.
The change in leadership signals continuity rather than a departure from UBA’s established vision, with the institution expected to continue pursuing growth opportunities, strengthening its operations and contributing to Africa’s economic development.
UBA remains one of Africa’s leading financial institutions, providing banking and financial services across several markets while continuing to invest in innovation, sustainability and initiatives that support individuals, businesses and communities.
