The governorship ambition of Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, is a long-standing political aspiration rather than a recent development, a political associate, Akinleye, has said.
Adeola, who represents Ogun West Senatorial District, has emerged as a major figure in the political contest ahead of the 2027 governorship election in Ogun State. His ambition has been the subject of political discussion for several years, with reports tracing his interest in the state’s top political office to earlier election cycles.
The senator’s political journey has included service in the Lagos State House of Assembly, the House of Representatives and the Senate. He represented Lagos West in the Senate from 2015 to 2023 before returning to his ancestral Ogun West Senatorial District, which he has represented since 2023.
Adeola’s current bid has gained significant political momentum. In April 2026, Governor Dapo Abiodun announced him as the All Progressives Congress (APC) consensus governorship candidate for the 2027 election in Ogun State.
Supporters of the senator have argued that his political experience, grassroots presence and legislative background have positioned him as a strong contender for the governorship.
In recent months, political groups supporting his ambition have also intensified mobilisation across the state. The Ogun West Progressive Unity Forum, for instance, dismissed claims of division within Ogun West over Adeola’s aspiration and expressed support for his bid.
The Yayi Progressives Movement has similarly described Adeola as a politician with legislative experience, administrative competence and grassroots appeal, while highlighting issues such as infrastructure, economic development, education, healthcare and youth empowerment as areas associated with his political agenda.
Adeola’s political supporters have also linked his ambition to the long-standing agitation for greater representation of Ogun West in the state’s governorship. Ogun State was created in 1976, but the Ogun West Senatorial District has yet to produce a governor, a point frequently raised by his supporters in advocating for his candidacy.
The senator’s political trajectory has therefore made the 2027 contest particularly significant. Having previously represented Lagos West at the Senate before winning election in Ogun West, Adeola has gradually established a stronger political presence in Ogun State.
With the APC endorsement now placing him at the centre of the party’s 2027 strategy in Ogun, attention is expected to remain focused on how his campaign develops and how other political parties and aspirants respond to his emergence.
For his supporters, however, the ambition is not an accidental or sudden political move. They maintain that Adeola’s pursuit of the Ogun governorship has been carefully developed over the years through political experience, grassroots engagement and sustained involvement in the affairs of the state.
The 2027 election will ultimately determine whether that long-standing ambition translates into victory at the polls.
