The Imo State Government has attributed the postponement of the local government elections scheduled for Saturday, September 26, to an ongoing court case challenging the conduct of the polls.
The State Commissioner for Information, Public Orientation and Strategy, Declan Emelumba, disclosed this in a statement issued on Friday, explaining the circumstances surrounding the decision.
Emelumba said a political party had approached the court seeking to stop the Imo State Independent Electoral Commission from proceeding with the elections.
According to the Commissioner, the legal challenge remains pending, with the substantive suit adjourned until October 30 for hearing.
He said the state government could not proceed with the election while the legal process remained unresolved.
Emelumba explained that the government was awaiting the outcome of the court proceedings before fixing a new date for the local government elections.
He added that a fresh date would be announced once the legal issues surrounding the polls had been resolved.
