President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and several former Nigerian Heads of State are expected to attend the burial of former President Muhammadu Buhari in Daura, Katsina State, today. Buhari passed away in London on Sunday after a prolonged illness at the age of 82. The burial will take place in accordance with Islamic tradition, which requires swift burial within 24 hours of death.
President Tinubu described Buhari as “a patriot who served Nigeria with unyielding commitment and honour” and declared a seven-day national mourning period. Flags will fly at half-mast across the country as a mark of respect. Former President Olusegun Obasanjo paid tribute to Buhari, calling him “a statesman, a colleague, a reputable soldier, and co-patriot who will be sorely missed”. Obasanjo highlighted Buhari’s dedication to democracy and his efforts to stabilize the Nigerian economy during his tenure.
Governors and other dignitaries from across Nigeria have also paid their respects, describing Buhari’s legacy as a leader who championed discipline, integrity, and national unity. They praised his commitment to fighting corruption and his efforts to improve the country’s infrastructure. Vice President Kashim Shettima, directed by President Tinubu, accompanied Buhari’s remains from London, where he died at approximately 4:30 p.m. on Sunday.
The body will be flown directly to Daura for Janazah prayers and burial rites. President Tinubu is expected to join the proceedings in Daura later in the day, where he will likely pay his final respects to the late leader. Security has been intensified in Daura ahead of the high-profile gathering, with federal forces deployed to secure key areas and control the anticipated crowd.
Some West African leaders are expected to arrive in Nigeria for condolence visits, although specific names have not been confirmed. The international community has also paid tribute to Buhari’s leadership, acknowledging his role in shaping Nigeria’s democratic trajectory. As the nation mourns the loss of a significant figure, the burial ceremony will serve as a moment for Nigerians to reflect on Buhari’s contributions to the country’s development and stability.
