The Enugu State Electricity Regulatory Commission (EERC) has reduced the electricity tariff for Band A customers from N209 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) to N160/kWh, effective August 1, 2025. This decision applies to customers served by MainPower Electricity Distribution Limited, the new utility operator in Enugu State, which took over from Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC).
The revised rate is based on a cost-reflective approach, considering the federal government’s ongoing subsidy on electricity generation, which reduces the cost from N112 to N45 per kWh. This brings the average cost-reflective tariff to N94/kWh. Band A customers will benefit from the reduced tariff of N160/kWh, while tariffs for Bands B, C, D, and E will remain frozen.
The EERC chairman, Chijioke Okonkwo, cautioned that the N160 rate may not be sustainable if the federal government withdraws the existing subsidy on power generation, potentially leading to higher tariffs. To ensure accountability, MainPower is required to publish a rolling seven-day average of daily power supply hours for each Band A feeder on its website by 9 am daily.
MainPower will also report to the Commission within 24 hours if it fails to meet the committed service level on any Band A feeder for two consecutive days and automatically downgrade any Band A feeder that fails to meet the committed service level for seven consecutive days to its actual recorded supply level.
The EERC’s decision is based on the Enugu State Electricity Law 2023, which grants the state regulatory control over power generation, transmission, and distribution, following the 2023 Constitutional Amendment and the Electricity Act 2023 .
