Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, has thrown his weight behind Governor Monday Okpebholo’s decision to demand security clearance from former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, before visiting Edo State. According to Wike, Okpebholo’s request is a reasonable one, given his responsibility as the state’s chief security officer to ensure Obi’s safety while in the state.
The governor’s demand for security clearance came on the heels of a previous visit by Obi to Edo State, which Okpebholo linked to a security breach that resulted in the deaths of three people. After Obi donated N15 million to a nursing school in Benin City, there were reports of tragic incidents, and Okpebholo cited this as the reason for requiring prior notice for any future visits by Obi.
Wike defended Okpebholo’s stance, stating that the governor didn’t bar Obi from entering Edo State but rather requested prior notice so that necessary security arrangements could be made to guarantee Obi’s safety. Wike drew from his own experience as Rivers State governor, where he often provided Obi with vehicles and logistics during his presidential campaign. Wike emphasized the importance of security coordination for visiting dignitaries and suggested that Okpebholo’s request was in line with standard security protocols.
Wike also took the opportunity to criticize Obi’s actions, describing some of his behaviors as “political theatrics.” He questioned whether it was fitting for a presidential candidate to be serving food to guests, suggesting that such actions detract from the seriousness of the office being sought. Wike’s comments reflect a broader critique of Obi’s approach to politics and his public appearances.
By backing Okpebholo’s demand for security clearance, Wike highlighted the complexities involved in balancing security concerns with political freedoms.
