Flooding

The Federal Government has issued a flood alert to 15 northern states, warning residents of potential flooding between August 10 and August 14, 2025, due to forecasted heavy rainfall. The affected states include Adamawa, Bauchi, Nasarawa, Kaduna, Katsina, Kebbi, Kano, Niger, Taraba, Jigawa, Yobe, Zamfara, Sokoto, Borno, and Kwara.
Kebbi State has the highest number of flagged flood-prone locations, with 10 towns identified, including Kamba, Kangiwa, Kalgo, Ribah, Sakaba, Saminaka, Gwandu, Jega, and Birnin Kebbi. Residents in high-risk areas are advised to take immediate precautions to prevent loss of life and property.
The National Flood Early Warning Centre, under the Federal Ministry of Environment, issued the warning, urging residents and state agencies to intensify efforts to protect lives and property. The government has also advised stakeholders to report any flood incidents promptly to enable rapid emergency response.
Some of the prominent towns and communities likely to face severe flooding include Jimeta, Mubi, Keffi, Kafanchan, Birnin Kebbi, Minna, Gusau, and Sokoto. The ministry has predicted that high-risk states will experience significant flooding due to heavy rainfall.
This warning comes on the heels of a similar alert issued last month to 11 states, advising early preparation to mitigate flood risks. Over 832 communities in the aforementioned states are expected to experience varying degrees of flooding within the mentioned 15 days. More than 100 major transport routes are also expected to experience disruptions with a high likelihood of displacement, particularly in flood-prone areas.
The Federal Government has emphasized the importance of cooperation among stakeholders to mitigate the impact of flooding. Residents are urged to remain vigilant and adhere to early warning directives. Emergency response agencies are also on standby to respond to any flood incidents.
