The New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) have experienced mixed fortunes in the recent Kano State by-elections.
In the Bagwai/Shanono state constituency by-election, the NNPP candidate, Aliyu Kiyawa, emerged victorious with 16,198 votes, defeating the APC candidate, Ahmad Muhammad Kadamu, who garnered 5,347 votes. This victory strengthens NNPP’s grip on the State House of Assembly, with the party now occupying 26 seats out of 40. The NNPP candidate’s win was declared by the Returning Officer, Professor Hassan Shitu, who cited that Kiyawa had satisfied the requirements of the law and scored the highest number of votes .
However, in the Ghari/Tsanyawa constituency, the APC candidate, Garba Gwarmai, won the supplementary election with 31,472 votes, defeating the NNPP candidate, Yusuf Ali Maigado, who scored 27,931 votes. The APC’s victory in this constituency was announced by the Returning Officer, Professor Muhammad Waziri of Bayero University.
The elections were not without controversy, as both parties raised concerns about violence and voter intimidation. The APC called for the cancellation of the results, alleging disruptions by thugs, while the NNPP dismissed these claims as frivolous. Despite these issues, the NNPP has praised the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies for ensuring a credible and peaceful voting process .
The NNPP candidate, Aliyu Kiyawa, has promised to prioritize legislation that addresses infrastructure, youth development, education, and healthcare in the constituency. The party’s victory has been seen as a consolidation of its dominance in Kano State politics.
