Obi’s endorsements have not guaranteed electoral success, as seen in the 2023 Imo State gubernatorial election where Athan Achonu lost to Hope Uzodimma, and the 2024 Edo State governorship election where Olumide Akpata lost to Monday Okpebholo. These losses have raised questions about the effectiveness of Obi’s endorsements and his ability to deliver victories.
Obi’s switch of allegiance to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the Anambra State by-elections, particularly in Onitsha, his hometown, has also been criticized. The ADC candidate secured only 1,909 votes, while the Labour Party performed poorly. This move has raised questions about Obi’s party loyalty and his ability to make strategic decisions.
Furthermore, Obi’s support for Akpata in the Edo State governorship election was at odds with the party leadership’s preference, highlighting factional rifts within the party. Ekong advises Obi to take a step back and reflect on his actions, considering whether his recent moves have eroded the foundation of support he enjoyed in 2023.
