A violent clash broke out at Mandilas Market on Lagos Island, leaving one person dead and several others injured. The incident occurred on Wednesday, August 27, when a dispute between two traders over job earnings turned deadly. According to eyewitnesses, the altercation began when a Yoruba trader and an Igbo trader argued over sharing proceeds from a business deal, which escalated into a fight.
The situation quickly spiraled out of control, with one of the traders allegedly stabbing the other, resulting in his death. The victim, Sodiq Ibrahim, from Kogi State, was pronounced dead at the scene. The suspect, Ebuka Adindu, from Abia State, allegedly stabbed himself in the shoulder after the incident and is currently under police custody in the hospital.
The Lagos State Police Command quickly intervened, restoring order and assuring the public that the situation is under control. The police spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, clarified that the incident was not ethnically motivated but a personal dispute between two individuals. He urged residents to remain calm and law-abiding, stressing that Lagos remains a peaceful state.
Normalcy has been restored to the market, and commercial activities have resumed without disruption. The police have assured the public that the suspect will face prosecution once he recovers from his injuries.
