The Petroleum Tanker Drivers (PTD) has advised its members to ignore the strike notice issued by the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), which was set to take effect on Monday, September 8, 2025. NUPENG had announced the strike over a dispute with Dangote Refinery regarding the deployment of 4,000 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered trucks for fuel distribution nationwide.
NUPENG cited concerns that the recruitment of drivers for the CNG trucks under new terms of engagement may exclude drivers from joining existing unions in the oil and gas sector, violating labour rights and freedoms. The union also expressed worries that the new system could displace thousands of its members from their current roles.
However, PTD has rejected NUPENG’s directive, describing it as “insensitive” and “unacceptable”. PTD leaders argue that NUPENG’s actions lack wisdom and coordination, and that the strike would cripple economic activities, impoverish the masses, and cause more harm. They also claim that NUPENG’s leadership has failed to support clamping down on illegal oil bunkering and other unlawful activities that promote economic sabotage.
PTD has urged the Federal Government, the National Security Adviser, the National Assembly, the Department of State Services, the Inspector General of Police, and other industry stakeholders to intervene and prevent NUPENG from undermining the relative peace and progress in the oil and gas sector. They also called for the immediate arrest of NUPENG leaders to allow peace and normalcy to return .
