The Flying Eagles of Nigeria have arrived in Talca, Chile, to participate in the 2025 FIFA U20 World Cup. This marks a significant milestone for the team, which is one of Africa’s most successful youth teams, with two previous runner-up finishes in the tournament.
The team’s head coach, Ali Zubair, expressed confidence in the team’s abilities, stating they’ve corrected mistakes from previous tournaments and are better prepared for the FIFA U20 World Cup in Chile.
The Flying Eagles are in Group F alongside Norway, Saudi Arabia, and Colombia, with all their matches taking place in Talca’s Estadio Fiscal de Talca.
Their campaign begins on September 29 against Norway, followed by matches against Saudi Arabia and Colombia. Prior to their arrival in Talca, the team wrapped up a 12-day training camp in Santiago, where they played friendly matches against host nation Chile and Australia, drawing 1-1 and winning 3-1 respectively.
The team is lodged at Hotel Diego de Almagro in Talca and has begun final preparations for the tournament. The Flying Eagles are hoping to make a deep run in the tournament, leveraging their talented squad and defined playing style.
This FIFA U20 World Cup appearance is an opportunity for the team to exorcise past demons, particularly from their traumatic experience in Chile in 1987, and bring glory to Nigerian football.
With a rich history in the tournament, having participated in multiple editions since 1983, the Flying Eagles are known for producing future Super Eagles stars such as Mikel Obi, Taye Taiwo, Kelechi Iheanacho, and Victor Osimhen.
The team’s current squad boasts talented players like Daniel Bameyi, a aerially dominant defender, and Daniel Daga, a quick winger with pace and big-game moments. As the team prepares to take on their opponents, fans and supporters will be eagerly following their progress.
