William Troost-Ekong, the captain of the Super Eagles, has announced his retirement from international football, just 19 days before the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) kicks off. The 32-year-old defender, who has been capped 83 times, made the announcement on social media, saying playing for Nigeria was the greatest privilege of his life .
Troost-Ekong’s decision comes after Nigeria failed to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, losing to DR Congo on penalties in the play-offs. He was part of the Nigerian squad that reached the final of the previous AFCON edition, where he was named Player of the Tournament .
The centre-back, who currently plays for a Saudi Arabia-based club, had been included in Eric Chelle’s preliminary 54-man squad for the upcoming AFCON. Nigeria will face Tanzania in their opening Group C match on December 23.
Troost-Ekong’s retirement marks the end of a 10-year career with the Super Eagles. He made his debut in 2015 and went on to play in five major tournaments, including the 2018 World Cup in Russia. He also led Nigeria to a bronze medal at the Rio 2016 Olympics.
Wilfred Ndidi has replaced Troost-Ekong as captain, and the Super Eagles are gearing up for a new era under Eric Chelle’s leadership. The team will also face Tunisia and Uganda in the group phase of the AFCON
Troost-Ekong’s legacy as one of Nigeria’s greatest defenders is already cemented. He will be remembered for his contributions to Nigerian football and his commitment to the national team. The Super Eagles will miss his experience and leadership in the upcoming AFCON
