United Bank for Africa (UBA), a leading African bank, has partnered with Lions Group, a top entertainment company, to revolutionize festive banking in Nigeria. Their joint “Welcome to the Detty Side” campaign highlights a strategic move by financial institutions to use lifestyle platforms for boosting customer engagement and loyalty.
The collaboration delivers premium experiences by fusing financial services with exclusive entertainment access for UBA clients and the Nigerian diaspora. Key to this is the UBA Red Pass, a digital card that functions as both an access pass and a payment method, offering privileged entry to concerts, resorts, and major events paired with financial incentives like cashback.
At the MoU signing, Alero Ladipo, UBA’s Group Head of Marketing & Corporate Communications, stated the partnership aims to reward customers with unique, memorable engagements. “Teaming with the prestigious Lions Group lets us deliver premium value during the peak festive season, offering exclusive access to Lagos’s most sought-after beach destinations and concerts,” she explained.
This partnership reflects a broader trend in which Nigerian banks are integrating lifestyle experiences into their financial products—a strategy gaining traction in emerging markets facing competition from digital-first alternatives. UBA’s Red Pass exemplifies this shift, acting as a dual gateway to entertainment and savings to transform routine transactions into experiential banking, thereby merging finance with lifestyle.
Adebayo Abe, Lions Group Africa’s Vice President of Strategy and Growth, highlighted the partnership’s mutual advantages. “UBA was a natural partner for our vision of creating unforgettable yuletide experiences,” he stated. “The Red Pass is the key, enabling seamless access to premium events and destinations while offering discounts and cashback.”
Beyond access, the initiative delivers tangible value: a 25% discount at Lions Group’s premium beaches and 5% cashback on major concert tickets purchased through the Detty Side platform. To complete the experience, a partnership with travel leader Wakanow provides seamless booking for diaspora customers traveling home for the holidays.
According to Wakanow, the partnership with UBA is a strategic opportunity to access a broader, tech-oriented audience. Vice President Gbolahan Salami described the collaboration as an efficient channel to scale their reach and service, highlighting the innovative potential of such cross-sector alliances between banking and lifestyle.
