Dave Umahi

Minister of Works, David Umahi, has directed federal road contractors to halt the closure of project sites without authorization, especially during the Yuletide season. This move aims to ensure smooth traffic flow on major highways and complete ongoing projects.
Umahi emphasized that strategic roads like the Abuja-Lokoja Expressway and key corridors in Sokoto, Katsina, and Kebbi states must remain operational. He also announced plans to digitalize project monitoring, including creating zonal project portals for real-time updates.
Contractors who fail to comply may face penalties, including recovery of advance payments through banks. Umahi stressed that poor supervision has been a major challenge in delivering federal infrastructure and vowed to end “office-based engineering”.
The minister’s directive is part of efforts to improve project delivery and address Nigeria’s infrastructure deficit. Umahi has been vocal about tackling issues plating federal projects, including contractor abandonment and delays.
Umahi’s latest move has been welcomed by stakeholders, who hope it will bring much-needed relief to road users. The digitalization of project monitoring is also expected to increase transparency and accountability.
The ministry has promised to provide regular updates on project progress, and stakeholders are eager to see tangible results. Would you like to know more about the specific projects affected or the measures in place to ensure contractor compliance?
