Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle has called for improvements despite Nigeria’s 2-1 win over Tanzania in their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) opener. Chelle acknowledged that the team created several chances, especially in the first half, but admitted mistakes in the second half allowed Tanzania to get back into the game.
The Super Eagles took the lead through Semi Ajayi’s header in the 36th minute, but Tanzania equalized five minutes after the restart through Charles M’Mombwa. Ademola Lookman’s superb strike restored Nigeria’s lead, securing a 2-1 win. Despite the victory, Chelle stressed that the team must show greater discipline and control, especially against stronger opponents .
Chelle emphasized that small details decide games at this level and urged his team to reduce mistakes. He noted that the opening win was encouraging, but the team must improve their game management to progress in the tournament .
The coach also highlighted the need for better off-the-ball movement and defensive solidity. Nigeria will face Tunisia next, and Chelle expects a tougher challenge. He praised his players for their fighting spirit but emphasized that there’s still much work to be done .
Nigeria’s win was marked by Victor Osimhen’s struggles to find the target, despite having several chances. The team’s reliance on Osimhen was also highlighted as a potential vulnerability ⁵.
Chelle’s side will look to build on their momentum against Tunisia on Saturday, with the aim of securing a strong position in Group C .
