Nigeria and the US are strengthening their security cooperation, particularly in counter-terrorism efforts. This collaboration includes intelligence sharing, military logistics, and humanitarian support to tackle terrorism and violence across the country.
The cooperation is a result of high-level talks between Nigerian and US officials, including National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu and US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth. The discussions focused on enhancing Nigeria’s capacity to detect and respond to terrorist threats.
The US has intensified intelligence-gathering flights over Nigeria, signaling deepening security cooperation amid rising militant violence. The flights, operated by Tenax Aerospace, aim to collect intelligence on militant groups, including Boko Haram and ISWAP.
Nigeria’s government has refuted allegations of genocide against Christians, emphasizing that attacks affect citizens of all faiths. The US has pledged to support Nigeria’s efforts to combat terrorism, while also urging accountability for human rights.
A Joint Working Group has been established to coordinate security efforts, including intelligence sharing, defence equipment requests, and humanitarian assistance. The partnership aims to promote regional stability and protect vulnerable communities.
The cooperation is seen as a significant step in addressing Nigeria’s security challenges, but some voices have urged caution, emphasizing the need to respect Nigeria’s sovereignty.
