The controversy surrounding Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde’s alleged receipt of N50 billion from President Bola Tinubu following the January 2024 Ibadan explosion continues to escalate. Former Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose has accused Makinde of failing to disclose the support publicly and questioned how the funds were utilized.
Fayose claims the N50 billion was provided by the presidency to help Oyo State manage the aftermath of the explosion, but only N4.5 billion was released to victims. Makinde’s Chief Press Secretary, Sulaimon Olanrewaju, has dismissed the allegations as baseless, challenging Fayose to provide evidence.
The Ibadan explosion, which occurred on January 22, 2024, killed five people, injured 77, and damaged about 55 houses. Makinde had visited President Tinubu at the Aso Rock Villa to present a report on the incident.
Fayose’s accusations are seen as part of ongoing internal disputes within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), with Fayose aligning with the Wike-led faction and Makinde with the Kabiru Turaki-led faction. Olanrewaju has questioned Fayose’s credibility, pointing out that even his family has denounced him.
The controversy has sparked concerns about transparency and accountability in governance, particularly regarding emergency funds and disaster relief. Fayose has challenged Makinde to take legal action if his claims are untrue, insisting he has documentary evidence.
The Oyo State Government has begun disbursing relief funds to victims of the explosion, with the Bodija Estate Residents’ Association confirming receipt of N4.08 billion.
