Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, has revealed how Bola Tinubu secured victory in Rivers State during the 2023 presidential election. According to Wike, Tinubu’s win was largely due to his support, despite Wike being a PDP member at the time.
Wike’s revelation sheds light on the complex dynamics of Nigerian politics, where alliances and party affiliations often shift. His support for Tinubu in 2023 was seen as a significant factor in the APC candidate’s victory in Rivers State.
Tinubu polled 231,591 votes in Rivers State, defeating Labour Party’s Peter Obi who scored 175,071 votes, and PDP’s Atiku Abubakar who got 88,468 votes. This outcome was unexpected, given Rivers State’s history as a PDP stronghold.
Wike has since expressed his support for Tinubu’s re-election bid, stating he has no regrets backing him in 2023. His alignment with Tinubu has sparked speculation about his future in the APC .
The development has also raised questions about the PDP’s strategy in Rivers State, where the party has traditionally been dominant. Wike’s influence in the state is seen as crucial to the PDP’s electoral prospects.
