Mozambique has finally ended its 39-year wait for a first Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) victory, defeating Gabon 3-2 in a thrilling Group F match in Agadir. The Mambas, ranked 24 places below Gabon, took the lead through Faisal Bangal’s header in the 37th minute.
The Mozambican team extended their advantage via Geny Catamo’s penalty in the 42nd minute, putting pressure on Gabon. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang pulled one back before halftime, keeping Gabon’s hopes alive.
However, Mozambique sealed the win with Diogo Calila’s header in the 52nd minute. Despite Alex Moucketou-Moussounda’s late goal in the 76th minute, Gabon couldn’t overturn the deficit.
This historic win marks Mozambique’s first AFCON victory in 17 attempts, having previously drawn four and lost 12 matches since their debut in 1986. The result puts Mozambique level with Ivory Coast and Cameroon in Group F, with three points each.
Mozambique’s victory is a testament to their determination and skill, ending a long wait for their fans. The team’s next match will be crucial in determining their AFCON journey.
