The UN has condemned the US operation in Venezuela, stating that it undermined a fundamental principle of international law. The operation, which led to the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, has sparked widespread criticism and concerns about instability in the region.
The UN rights office spokesperson, Ravina Shamdasani, emphasized that “states must not threaten or use force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state”. She also stressed that accountability for human rights violations cannot be achieved through unilateral military intervention, which violates international law.
The international community is divided on the issue, with countries like Russia and China condemning the US action, while others like the EU are calling for a peaceful and democratic transition in Venezuela.
The situation in Venezuela remains tense, with the US and other countries recognizing opposition leader Juan Guaido as the interim president. The Venezuelan government has denounced the US operation as a coup attempt.
The UN has called for a peaceful resolution to the crisis, emphasizing the need for dialogue and respect for Venezuela’s sovereignty. The organization is working with regional partners to promote a peaceful and democratic transition.
