The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has stated that the upcoming governorship elections in Osun and Ekiti, as well as the FCT polls, will serve as a testing ground for the 2027 general elections. INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, made this remark while unveiling the timetable for the Ekiti and Osun governorship elections, scheduled for June 20 and August 8, 2026, respectively.
The commission has also sworn in six new Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) and emphasized the importance of their role in upholding the credibility of the electoral process. Prof. Yakubu urged the new RECs to focus on their responsibilities, operate within the limits of their powers, and adhere to the electoral legal framework, code of conduct, and regulations governing INEC’s operations.
The Ekiti and Osun governorship elections are significant, as they will test INEC’s preparedness for the 2027 general elections. The elections will also determine the ruling party’s grip on the South-West region, with the All Progressives Congress (APC) currently holding the governorships in both states.
The INEC chairman has assured Nigerians that the commission is finalizing preparations for the pending bye-elections and the resumption of Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) nationwide. The commission has also published the timetable and schedule of activities for the Ekiti and Osun governorship elections, including party primaries, nomination submissions, and campaign periods.
The elections in Ekiti and Osun will likely be closely contested, with the APC and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) vying for control. The outcome will provide valuable insights into the parties’ strengths and weaknesses ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The success of these elections will depend on various factors, including INEC’s effectiveness, security arrangements, and the conduct of politicians.
