EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede has denied allegations that the agency is victimizing former Attorney-General Abubakar Malami, stating that the investigation into Malami’s activities began before he took office. Olukoyede emphasized that he inherited the case file and has only ensured that the investigation is carried out professionally and thoroughly.
According to Olukoyede, Malami has been under investigation for nearly two and a half years, and the EFCC has gathered sufficient evidence to warrant charges. The EFCC boss stressed that the investigation is not personal and that the agency is committed to fighting corruption without being partisan.
Malami, on the other hand, has accused Olukoyede of harboring a personal vendetta and demanded that he recuse himself from the case. Malami claims that Olukoyede’s involvement is a conflict of interest, citing Olukoyede’s role as secretary to the Justice Ayo Salami Judicial Commission of Inquiry, which investigated allegations of corruption and abuse of office within the EFCC .
The EFCC has filed a 16-count money laundering charge against Malami, his son Abdulaziz Malami, and an employee of Rahamaniyya Properties Limited, alleging that they laundered about N9 billion to acquire multiple properties in Abuja, Kebbi, Kano, and other states .
Olukoyede has dismissed Malami’s allegations, stating that the EFCC’s mandate requires it to enforce the law and be seen as doing so fairly. He emphasized that allegations of bias are unfounded and that the agency will continue to investigate and prosecute corruption cases without fear or favor.
The case has sparked controversy, with some accusing the EFCC of selective enforcement and political persecution. However, Olukoyede maintains that the agency is committed to upholding the law and fighting corruption.
