President Bola Tinubu has extended condolences to the Government and people of Lagos State over the death of Oba Babatunde Akran, the Oba of Badagry, who passed away at 89. The late monarch was a revered traditional ruler who provided visionary leadership to his domain for over 40 years, promoting harmony, tolerance, unity, and prosperity among his people.
Oba Akran was a man of great wisdom, who worked as a teacher and journalist before ascending the throne in 1977. He was the permanent Vice Chairman of the Lagos State Traditional Council and played a significant role in preserving Badagry’s rich cultural heritage, a former slave harbour and route.
Tinubu acknowledged Oba Akran’s efforts in maintaining a balance between modernity and tradition, managing multicultural interests, and ensuring the sanctity of various cultural icons. He prayed for the repose of the monarch’s soul and comfort for his family.
The late Oba Akran’s legacy includes protecting and projecting Badagry Kingdom’s historical significance, attracting global attention. His death marks the end of a remarkable 48-year reign, making him one of Lagos State’s longest-serving traditional rulers.
Residents of Badagry are mourning the loss of their revered monarch, describing him as a father figure whose wisdom and counsel brought reassurance. Traditional rites for his burial have commenced.
