Oil Drilling

The Federal Government of Nigeria has approved commercial oil drilling at Tongeji Island in Ogun State, with the Olokola Deep Seaport project also set to take off soon. This development is expected to boost Ogun State’s economy and position it as an oil-producing state. Governor Dapo Abiodun announced this while receiving the Flag Officer Commanding, Western Naval Command, Rear Admiral Abubakar Abdullahi Mustapha, and senior officers.
The approval is a significant milestone for Ogun State, which has long aspired to become an oil-producing state. The Tongeji Island oil drilling project is expected to promote inclusion and economic empowerment for residents of coastal communities. The Olokola Deep Seaport, on the other hand, will help decongest the Lagos ports and provide an alternative logistics corridor.
President Bola Tinubu has expressed interest in the projects, directing that construction of the Olokola Deep Seaport should be far advanced between now and next year. The seaport will be known as the Blue Marine Economic Zone, reflecting its strategic coastal location and vast economic potential.
The Nigerian Navy has established a Forward Operations Base at Tongeji Island, which will help prevent infiltration from neighboring Benin Republic and discourage attempts to undermine Nigeria’s territorial integrity. Governor Abiodun commended the Navy for its contribution to the state’s security architecture.
The Ogun State Government is working to provide basic amenities for residents of Tongeji Island, improving living conditions and supporting emerging economic activities. The government has also established the Ministry of Mineral Resources to oversee natural resource administration and operation.
The Olokola Deep Seaport project is expected to provide opportunities for companies in the state to move goods and equipment, complementing the Gateway Agro-Cargo International Airport and planned Dry Port. The state government has concluded plans to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with private sector players for the construction of the seaport.
Overall, the approval of the Tongeji Island oil drilling project and the Olokola Deep Seaport is a significant development for Ogun State, with potential economic benefits and opportunities for growth.
