President Bola Tinubu has appointed Kayode Are as ambassador-designate to the United States and Ayodele Oke to France. This move is part of a broader effort to strengthen Nigeria’s diplomatic ties with key global partners.
Are, a retired Colonel, previously served as Director General of the State Security Service (SSS) from 1999 to 2007 and as National Security Adviser in 2010. His experience in security and diplomacy is expected to enhance Nigeria’s relations with the US.
Oke, a career diplomat, was former Director General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) and served as Nigeria’s ambassador to the Secretariat of the Commonwealth of Nations in London. His appointment to France is seen as a strategic move to boost economic and cultural ties.
Other appointments include Amin Dalhatu as high commissioner-designate to the United Kingdom and Usman Dakingari as ambassador-designate to Turkey. These nominations are part of a larger list of 68 ambassadorial candidates confirmed by the Senate in December 2025.
The appointments are expected to enhance Nigeria’s diplomatic presence globally and promote economic interests. The nominees are awaiting Senate confirmation to assume their roles.
