Ademola Lookman has joined Atletico Madrid from Atalanta for a reported €40 million, signing a four-and-a-half-year contract. The Nigerian international has been a key player for Atalanta, scoring 55 goals in all competitions since joining in 2022. Lookman’s standout moment was a hat-trick in Atalanta’s 2024 Europa League final triumph over Bayer Leverkusen, securing the Italian club’s first European trophy.
Lookman, 28, was born in London and began his professional career at Charlton Athletic in 2015. He earned a move to Everton in 2017, but struggled to find consistent opportunities, leading to loan spells at RB Leipzig, Fulham, and Leicester City. His transformative switch to Atalanta in 2022 revived his career, making him one of Europe’s most decisive attackers.
Atletico Madrid confirmed Lookman’s arrival, stating he’s already in Madrid for medical examinations and contract finalization. Manager Diego Simeone’s influence played a significant role in Lookman’s decision, with the forward convinced he’d play a central role in Simeone’s plans.
Lookman’s move to Atletico Madrid was reportedly favored over Fenerbahçe, with the Spanish club’s long-term interest and security of the deal swaying his decision. He aims to bolster Atletico’s attack, currently third in LaLiga, as they prepare for a Champions League knockout playoff clash against Club Brugge.
This transfer marks a significant step in Lookman’s career, having previously won the Africa Player of the Year award in 2024. His impressive performances have earned him a high-profile move to La Liga.
